One of Rice's greatest strengths is in creating truly interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to address the complex challenges facing society. Multidisciplinary teams are a natural outgrowth of Rice's small size, collaborative atmosphere, and lack of barriers between departments and schools. In the schools of science and engineering, priority programs revolve around nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and environmental technology, referred to as Nano-Bio-Info-Enviro.
The Brown School of Engineering is considered one of the 10 best undergraduate engineering schools at private universities in the United States. About one-fourth of Rice students are engineering majors. Among the 98 engineering faculty, 13 are members of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. Houston, an international center for the oil and gas industry, the medical profession, and space exploration, offers a practical laboratory for Rice engineering students. Many work closely with the Texas Medical Center, NASA, and a variety of the university's industrial partners.
Funding is most needed to create fellowships for graduate students, who play key roles in faculty members' research programs. Funds are also needed to support undergraduate research in these areas. Rice is one of only a few places where undergraduates can be involved in prestigious research, presenting papers at conferences and getting one step ahead of other students seeking graduate research positions at other universities. Funding opportunities also exist to help recruit and retain young faculty.
