Nathaniel Forrester ’19 first heard about Rice through QuestBridge, an organization that connects exceptional students from low-income backgrounds with leading universities and financial support. “I received a letter in the mail from QuestBridge,” he said. “At first I thought the program sounded too good to be true. But I looked it up online and applied to be a college prep scholar.”
Over the next year, Nathaniel worked on the college match program, where he identified Rice as his top choice. When he learned that he had matched with Rice, he was overwhelmed.
“It was surreal for me,” Nathaniel says. “My mom started crying, and my dad seemed unable to talk. They were stunned. I had to tell them it was okay.”
Nathaniel, who is premed, joined the EMT program at Rice. He sees this as a way to practice his skills, connect with others and give back to the community. “You get to be there in big moments in people’s lives," he says. "You have the opportunity to make a difference in what happens next for the person in need. It’s really exciting to be there, offering help in their worst moment. I make sure they are getting the best care possible, and I love it.”
Nathaniel is set to graduate this May and is a stellar example of what a policy like The Rice Investment can do for talented students and their families. “My scholarship has allowed me to focus on growing as a person and developing as a student. Plus, it has taken a huge burden off of my family. They don’t have to worry about me. They know I’m being taken care of.”
