24-Hour Challenge Volunteer Toolkit

Thank you for being one of the Rice Annual Fund’s dedicated alumni volunteers! Help us spread the word about this year’s 24-Hour Challenge by using the resources below. Every social media post and email you share about the challenge will help earn $400,000 for The Rice Investment, making the university more accessible to future Owls from all walks of life.

Toolkit
  • TALKING POINTS

When 4,000 Rice alumni make a gift of any size, to anywhere at Rice, on April 4, current and former Association of Rice Alumni Board members will collectively donate $400,000 to the Rice Annual Fund in support of The Rice Investment. Here are a few reasons why every Owl should consider supporting this effort:

    1. Help launch a new era of affordability.
Each Owl makes a difference. No matter the size of your gift, you can be a champion of affordability — and make a transformative impact on amazing Rice students through The Rice Investment — by contributing to the 24-Hour Challenge on April 4.

    2. This is a big moment for Rice — let’s seize it!
With the historic announcement of The Rice Investment and the board’s unanimous endorsement, there is no doubt this is a unique moment in Rice’s history — but we need the support of the entire alumni community to make this bold promise of affordability a reality beginning in 2019-2020.

    3. Pay it forward.
The Rice Investment calls all Owls to be loyal to the Rice legacy of providing access and opportunity to all, from all walks of life. Whether you received scholarship support or are passionate about supporting low- and middle-income students and families, now is the time to get behind The Rice Investment in an unprecedented show of support.

    4. Impact every area of campus.
Many of our alumni are excited about The Rice Investment, but there may be other priorities on campus they would like to support. Any gift (of any amount) to any program at Rice will be counted toward the 4,000 donor goal during the 24-Hour Challenge on April 4.
  • COMMUNICATIONS HIGHLIGHTS

    Week before the challenge:

    • The alumni community will receive an email from a current Rice student about the powerful impact of scholarship support. (If you received scholarship support from Rice, please post about your experience on social media and share why you are going to participate in the 24-Hour Challenge — make sure to include the date of April 4!)

    • Rice Annual Fund volunteers will receive a special package in the mail — stay tuned! Please be sure to email your Annual Fund class manager directly if your mailing address has changed recently or if you do not receive your package.

(Not sure who your class manager is? Check out the “Additional Questions?” section on this site.)

April 1 (Monday before the challenge):

Be on the lookout for a fun challenge reminder from the ARA Board in your email inbox!

    April 4:

It’s the day of the challenge! We’ll be keeping in touch with alumni throughout the day via email messages and social media. Be sure to post when you make your gift, and encourage your classmates to do so as well. And, be sure to check out this year’s new donor breakdown, including by residential college and class year, on the challenge website.

  • SAMPLE EMAIL TO CLASSMATES

Emailing your fellow alumni is a powerful way to help us reach the goal of 4,000 donors during the 24-Hour Challenge. Below you’ll find a sample email for your reference — feel free to jazz it up any way you like!

    Sample pre-challenge email:

Subject: Help us earn $400,000 for The Rice Investment on April 4!

[Insert reasons why you will be making a gift during the 24-Hour Challenge]
[SAMPLE: This year’s challenge resonates with me on a personal level. My scholarship was the only reason I was able to attend this amazing school, so I will be designating my challenge gift to The Rice Investment to pay it forward for the next generation of Owls.]

We can only earn the $400,000 challenge gift from the Association of Rice Alumni Board if 4,000 alumni make a gift within 24 hours.
