One of five children, Judson Webb '21 was the first in his family to venture beyond his home state of North Carolina for college. With three older brothers, Judson’s family was well-versed in college tuition costs. They knew he would need a competitive financial aid package to make his Rice dream work.
“My acceptance to Rice was a very happy time for me and my family,” Judson recounted. His financial aid package arrived soon after his acceptance notification, and everyone was relieved that Judson would be able to attend his number one choice. “I was thrilled to have been accepted. I was also relieved to find out that the cost of my college education wouldn’t impact my siblings’ plans. My scholarship has been essential to ensuring opportunity for my whole family.”
The Rice Investment was created to ease the burden of low- and middle-income families and takes into account the complex challenges facing families with multiple college-bound students. It was a priority to Judson to attend a university where all students were valued and supported, and Rice’s generous financial aid policy helped to assure him of Rice’s collaborative and supportive environment.
When asked about his favorite part of his Rice experience, Judson is quick to describe the university as a “community of support.” “It’s incredible to live and learn in an environment where everybody is working hard towards expanding their knowledge. I’m rooting for my friends, and they are rooting for me.”
