Give Rice students a professional edge — the Owl Edge!
Rice students’ knowledge, creativity and work ethic have always set them apart. But today, employers expect graduates to have real-world experience that hones their professional edge. We want to give every Rice student access to professional experience. To do that, we need you, Rice alumni, parents and friends. To host students at your workplace, to pave the way for summer-long internships and to support student experiences through philanthropy.
Owl Edge Externships are one- to five-day job-shadowing externships hosted by alumni, parents and friends designed to give an undergraduate student a tangible, realistic idea of a day in the life of your career field.
Owl Edge Internships provide summer professional experience designed to help students grow intellectually, enhance professional knowledge and skills, and make a positive impact on an organization or field of research.
The Owl Edge Experience Fund provides stipends to students interning or doing research with nonprofit and governmental agencies where compensation is limited or not provided.
Host an Owl Edge Internship
Rice is seeking internship opportunities for the summer of 2017. Owl Edge Internships are 8-12 week summer professional experiences with a strong Rice connection designed to help students grow intellectually, enhance professional knowledge and skills, and make a positive impact on an organization or field of research.
2017 Goal — 65 internships exclusively for Rice students
As a host, you create an opportunity within your organization and serve as a mentor to your student and help them learn more about your profession, company and industry. Interns arrange travel and funding, including those who receive support from the Owl Edge Experience Fund. The Center for Career Development (CCD) works with host organizations to develop job descriptions, post the internship opportunity and schedule interviews, while the host organization interviews and selects the intern(s).

“Actual career experience is the only way to see if you will like a job. A lot of fantasies are kept over four years in college, but on this externship you get to experience what the next 40 years would be like. I think job shadowing should be mandatory before people choose a major.”
— Brandi Ransom ’18, Natural Sciences, spring 2015 extern
