Anya Bolshakov’s ’15 Volunteer Impact

By Emily Gaines

Leading with Heart

When Anya Bolshakov ’15 talks about her Rice experience, her enthusiasm is unmistakable. “My time at Rice was wonderful,” she says. “That’s what keeps me involved as an alumna.” A double major in political science and Asian studies, Anya contributed her photography skills to the Rice Thresher, led the Campanile as editor-in-chief and was actively involved in life at Duncan College.

Among her many activities as an undergraduate, one experience stood out: her job as a telefund caller for The Rice Fund (known then as the Rice Annual Fund). “It started as just a job,” Anya explains. “But then I began volunteering because I loved speaking with alumni. It meant a lot to hear from people who love Rice as much as I do and learn how it shaped their lives beyond the hedges.”

That early connection to philanthropy sparked a lasting commitment. Today, Anya continues to support the university in multiple ways, including serving as a chair on her 10th reunion committee. “Whenever someone calls needing help, I’ll do it,” she says.

“Every gift to The Rice Fund goes directly to student life, and when we bring all the small gifts together, they accomplish something big.”

Her dedication extends beyond volunteering. Each year, Anya gives to several areas across campus, with a special focus on The Rice Fund. “Giving back to any part of Rice is important,” she shares. “But giving to The Rice Fund is the most important to me, because it supports the university’s greatest need. I can trust that my gift is going where it’s needed most.”

Anya also understands the collective power of giving. “There’s a force behind us when we all come together,” she begins. “I donate in small amounts, but what matters is giving what we can. Every gift to The Rice Fund goes directly to student life, and when we bring all the small gifts together, they accomplish something big.”

Ten years after graduation, Anya’s connection to Rice is stronger than ever. “Every Owl’s experience is different, but it’s always meaningful,” she says. “Seeing today’s students enjoying and benefitting from their time at Rice just deepens my commitment. Even if their experience isn’t exactly like mine, it’s still amazing. And I want them to have that.”

Now a successful construction attorney, Anya credits Rice with helping lay the foundation for her career. “Rice taught me how to think critically, communicate clearly and lead with purpose,” she reflects. “My time at Rice helped prepare me for the challenges I face every day.”
